There is freedom of religion in Lebanon, which is the only Arab state that is not officially Muslim. The eighteen recognized religious communities include four Muslim and twelve Christian groups. The Lebanese government keeps track of every citizen's religious affiliation, and while citizens are free to choose any religion, it is mandatory for them to choose (they cannot be unaffiliated). Christianity has been on the decline in Lebanon. Christians made up 62% of the population in 1970, but this number has dropped significantly. There has been - and continues to be - a large-scale emigration of Christians. As it is becoming clear that Muslims are now the majority, they are demanding more representation in government. The quality of life in Lebanon is better than the average country. Its healthcare is modern, and life expectancies are above 70 years for both males and females.
